Half set of uilleann pipes by Sam Lawrence (Hunter Pipes, North Yorkshire). Uilleann pipes are iconic of traditional Irish music and emerged in the 19th C. from the pastoral pipes, which were traditionally played across Ireland and the British Isles (history here and here). By the 1960s there were very few players or makers left, but following a concerted effort to revive the tradition, they are now found worldwide.
This set of pipes is in concert D pitch (A=440). It is made of cocobolo wood, moose antler and brass.
Owned, photographed and modelled by Ardern Hulme-Beaman
